Short answer: there is no legal definition of a "non-toxic candle," no certification body that awards the label, and no candle on the market β including ours β that can honestly claim to release nothing into the air. What the phrase usefully describes is a set of specific, checkable formulation choices. This page lists those choices, tells you exactly which ones Phoenix Crafted makes, and tells you plainly where the evidence runs out.
We would rather be the brand that explains the term than the brand that exploits it.
You will not find the words non-toxic, toxin-free or chemical-free anywhere on a Phoenix Crafted label. That is a deliberate decision, and it is grounded in federal guidance rather than modesty.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission publishes the Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims β commonly called the Green Guides β which govern how terms like this may be used in advertising. On non-toxic claims specifically, the Guides state:
"It is deceptive to misrepresent, directly or by implication, that a product, package, or service is non-toxic. Non-toxic claims should be clearly and prominently qualified to the extent necessary to avoid deception."
"A non-toxic claim likely conveys that a product, package, or service is non-toxic both for humans and for the environment generally. Therefore, marketers making non-toxic claims should have competent and reliable scientific evidence that the product, package, or service is non-toxic for humans and for the environment."
β 16 CFR Β§ 260.10, Federal Trade Commission
Read that carefully, because it sets a high bar. An unqualified "non-toxic" claim on a candle implies the product is non-toxic for humans and for the environment, and the marketer is expected to hold competent and reliable scientific evidence for both.
We do not hold independent laboratory emissions testing on our candles. Very few small candle makers do β it is genuinely expensive, and it must be repeated per formulation. Since we cannot produce that evidence on demand, we do not make the claim. What we can do is document every formulation decision we make and let you judge it. That is the rest of this page.
Everything is a chemical. Water is a chemical. Beeswax is a complex mixture of esters, fatty acids and hydrocarbons. Coconut wax is a chemically processed agricultural product. A candle that was genuinely "chemical-free" would be an empty jar. When a brand prints chemical-free, it is telling you something about its marketing department, not its formulation.
The Green Guides also address free-of claims, and they contain a rule most candle marketing quietly breaks. A free-of claim can be deceptive if "the substance has not been associated with the product category" (16 CFR Β§ 260.9(b)(2)). In plain terms: advertising that your product is free of something no product in the category has contained for twenty years is itself misleading, because it implies a risk your competitors carry and you have solved.
The clearest example in our own industry is lead. Lead-cored candle wicks have been banned in the United States since 2003 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Every candle legally sold in the U.S. has a lead-free wick. When you see "lead-free wick!" presented as a feature, you are looking at a description of the law, not a description of the product.
Our wicks are lead-free. So is every candle you can legally buy here. We would rather tell you that than let you believe we found you a rarity.
"Clean burning" is a real, useful idea, but it does not mean what most shoppers assume. It is not primarily a property of the wax. It is primarily a property of combustion β and combustion is something you and we control together.
A candle burns cleanly when the wick delivers fuel to the flame at the rate the flame can completely consume. Get that balance right and you get a steady, tall, quiet flame with minimal visible soot. Get it wrong β usually by using a wick that is too large for the vessel, or by letting an untrimmed wick mushroom, or by burning in a draft β and you get flickering, a smoking tip, and black deposits on the glass.
This is why the honest version of "clean burning" involves four factors, and wax type is only one of them:

Here is the sentence most candle marketing will not print: no candle is soot-free. Any hydrocarbon burning in air produces some particulate. A well-made candle burned properly produces very little; a poorly wicked candle burned badly produces a lot. The wax on the label is not the deciding variable β the wick engineering and your burn habits are.
We spend a disproportionate amount of our development time on wick sizing for exactly this reason. It is the least glamorous and most consequential part of making a candle.

Our candles are poured in a coconut-soy and beeswax blend. All three components are renewable, plant- or bee-derived materials rather than petroleum by-products.
Proportion: the blend is majority coconut-soy, with beeswax as the minority component at roughly a quarter of the wax by weight. The precise ratio is proprietary, but we will always tell you which direction the blend leans and roughly how far, because "contains beeswax" on its own tells you nothing β a blend with a trace of beeswax and a blend built on it are different products sold under the same phrase.
We blend rather than pour a single wax because each one solves a problem the others create. A 100% soy candle is prone to frosting and wet spots. A 100% coconut candle is too soft to stand up. A 100% beeswax candle is beautiful and expensive and fights any fragrance you add to it.
What we do not claim: we do not claim our blend is healthier to breathe than any other wax. We have not tested that, and brands that assert it usually have not either.
Every fragrance oil we buy is phthalate-free and paraben-free, without exception, confirmed by documentation from our fragrance suppliers. This is a meaningful statement rather than a category-wide baseline: phthalates are still legally usable in candle fragrance in the United States, so their absence describes an actual sourcing decision rather than compliance with a rule.
It is also a policy rather than a per-product claim. We do not maintain a phthalate-free line alongside a conventional one, and we do not substitute a cheaper oil when a fragrance is hard to source. If an oil is not phthalate-free and paraben-free, we do not pour it, and the scent does not launch.
We pour at a 10% fragrance load β the upper end of the range candle makers normally work in, and the reason our candles throw as strongly as they do. Most production candles sit between 6% and 8%. Going higher is not simply a matter of adding more oil: above a certain point the wax cannot bind the fragrance, and you get seepage, an unstable flame and a shorter burn. Reaching 10% reliably is a function of the coconut content in our blend, which holds oil better than soy alone, and of wick sizing matched to that load.
On the standard most shoppers have heard of: candles fall under Category 12 of the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standards. Our suppliers provide IFRA Certificates of Conformity for the oils we purchase, and we formulate within the stated maximum for each fragrance.
One point of accuracy that matters, because it is widely misrepresented: there is no such thing as an "IFRA-certified candle." IFRA does not issue certificates and does not authorise anyone to certify on its behalf. Certificates of Conformity are issued by the company that formulates the fragrance mixture β our supplier β and passed to us. Any brand telling you their candle is "IFRA certified" is describing something that does not exist. What we can tell you, truthfully, is that our fragrances arrive with supplier conformity documentation and we formulate inside it.
What we do not claim: we do not publish a full fragrance ingredient breakdown, because our suppliers hold those formulations as trade secrets and do not disclose them to us in full.
We offer cotton and wooden wicks. Both are lead-free, as required by U.S. law since 2003.
Our wooden wicks are untreated natural wood β no chemical treatment, no coating, no accelerant applied to make lighting easier. This is worth stating explicitly because it is not universal: some wooden wicks on the market are treated to improve ignition, and an untreated wick asks slightly more of you at first light in exchange for burning as plain wood.
Cotton gives a quiet, steady flame. Wood gives a soft crackle and a wider, flatter flame. Neither is cleaner than the other in any measurable sense β wooden wicks require slightly different trimming (roughly 1/8 to 3/16 inch, versus 1/4 inch for cotton), and a wooden wick trimmed too long is the single most common cause of a smoking wood-wick candle.
No added synthetic dyes. The colour you see in the wax is the natural colour of the blend and, in some scents, a faint tint contributed by the fragrance oil itself. We do not add UV inhibitors or hardeners.
Glass vessels, reusable once the candle is finished. Stop burning when roughly 1/2 inch of wax remains β past that point the flame sits too close to the base and the glass can overheat.
We think a brand's refusals tell you more than its promises. Here are ours.
We do not claim our candles purify air. No candle purifies air. Combustion adds material to a room; it does not remove it. Claims about negative-ion release or air purification from wax are marketing inventions.
We do not claim our candles are soot-free. All combustion produces some particulate. We aim for minimal, and correct wick sizing plus good burn habits get you most of the way there.
We do not claim our candles are safe for people with respiratory conditions. We are candle makers, not clinicians. If you have asthma, a respiratory diagnosis, or a fragrance sensitivity, ventilate well, burn for shorter sessions, or ask your doctor. That answer is less satisfying than a reassuring badge, and it is the only honest one.
We do not claim our candles are vegan. They are not. Beeswax is an animal product. It is in the blend on purpose, because it is the best hardener and stabiliser we have found, but that means the word vegan does not apply and we will not use it.
We do not claim our candles are non-toxic. See the top of this page. We do not hold the independent scientific evidence the FTC expects behind that claim, so we do not make it.
We do not claim to be better than paraffin for your health. We chose natural waxes for renewability, burn character, scent performance and the feel of the finished object. We did not choose them on the basis of a health study, and we are not going to imply one exists.
We do not make non-toxic claims, because under FTC guidance (16 CFR Β§ 260.10) an unqualified non-toxic claim implies safety for both humans and the environment and requires competent and reliable scientific evidence. This is a sourcing policy rather than a per-product claim: we do not run a conventional line alongside it, and if an oil does not meet the standard we do not pour it. Phthalates remain legal in candle fragrance in the U.S., so this reflects an actual choice rather than a category baseline.
