What is a wood wick candle?

A wood wick is a thin piece or layered construction of wood designed to draw melted wax upward and sustain a flame. Wood wicks are known for their horizontal flame, modern appearance, and subtle crackling sound. The exact sound varies by wick, wax, vessel, and room acoustics.

What is a cotton wick candle?

A cotton wick is made from braided fibers and is the traditional choice for container candles. It produces a familiar upright flame and is often forgiving to relight. A properly selected wick is matched to the wax, fragrance load, and vessel diameter.

Wood wick vs. cotton wick at a glance

Does a wood wick burn longer than a cotton wick?

Wick material alone does not determine total burn time. Burn time depends on the entire candle system: vessel diameter, wax blend, fragrance, wick size, number of wicks, airflow, and how long the candle burns during each session.

A wood wick may create a broad melt pool because of its shape, while a cotton wick may produce a taller flame. Neither is automatically better or longer-lasting in every candle. A well-designed candle should be tested as a complete formula.

Do wood wicks make candles smell stronger?

Not automatically. Hot throw—the fragrance released while a candle burns—depends on wax, fragrance chemistry, cure time, vessel, wick selection, and room conditions. A correctly matched cotton wick can also deliver excellent fragrance.

Why does a wood wick sometimes go out?

A wood wick can struggle when the charred portion is too long, the wick is buried in wax, or the candle is exposed to drafts. Before relighting, remove loose blackened wood and leave a short, clean edge. Do not break the wick below the wax surface.

How to care for a cotton wick

Before each burn, trim the cooled wick to the recommended length—commonly about 1/4 inch unless the candle’s instructions say otherwise. Remove loose wick debris from the wax. A wick left too long can create a large flame, soot, or uneven burning.

How to care for a wood wick

Wood wicks generally perform best when kept shorter than cotton wicks. Pinch or trim away the loose charred material before lighting. Keep the top surface clean, and give the flame time to establish itself. Use a long lighter so the flame can travel across the wick.

The first burn matters for both

Allow the melt pool to expand toward the vessel edges during the first burn, while always staying within the maximum burn time on the candle’s safety label. Extinguishing too early can encourage tunneling. Burning too long can overheat the vessel and reduce performance.

Which wick should you choose?
