Tealights & Votives Burning & Safety

Proper setup and supervision are essential when burning tealights and votives.

Always follow the instructions included with the product and any directions provided by the holder manufacturer.

Before Lighting

  • Place the candle on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep it away from drafts, vents, fans and open windows.
  • Keep it away from curtains, paper, fabric and other flammable materials.
  • Keep children and pets away from the burning area.
  • Confirm that the wick is centered and upright.
  • Remove packaging, labels or decorative materials not intended for burning.

Tealight Setup

Burn tealights only in their original heat-safe cups.

Place the cup inside an approved tealight holder that:

  • Is stable and heat resistant
  • Allows heat to escape safely
  • Does not place the flame near flammable material
  • Is large enough to hold the tealight securely

Do not remove a tealight from its cup or burn loose tealight wax directly on a surface.

Votive Setup

Votives must be burned inside a close-fitting votive holder.

The holder should:

  • Be made from heat-safe glass, ceramic or another approved material
  • Fit closely around the votive
  • Be tall enough to contain melted wax
  • Remain stable during the entire burn
  • Be free from cracks, chips and damage

Do not burn a votive freestanding. Votive wax is designed to soften and liquefy.

Wick Trimming

Before lighting, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch unless the product instructions state otherwise.

A properly trimmed wick helps reduce:

  • Excessive flame height
  • Soot
  • Uneven burning
  • Overheating

Allow the candle to cool fully before trimming or relighting.

During the Burn

  • Never leave a burning tealight or votive unattended.
  • Keep the wax pool free from matches, wick trimmings and debris.
  • Do not move the candle while the wax is hot or liquid.
  • Do not touch the cup or holder during or immediately after use.
  • Keep multiple burning candles several inches apart.
  • Do not burn near another heat source.
  • Discontinue use if the flame becomes unusually high or unstable.

Recommended Burn Sessions

Do not burn tealights or votives longer than the duration recommended on the product page or packaging.

As a general safety practice:

  • Avoid excessively long burn sessions.
  • Extinguish the candle if the holder becomes unusually hot.
  • Allow the holder to cool completely before relighting.

How to Extinguish

Use a candle snuffer when possible.

Do not use water. Water can cause hot wax to splatter and may crack a heated holder.

After extinguishing:

  • Confirm that the flame and wick ember are fully out.
  • Allow the wax and holder to cool completely.
  • Do not move or store the candle while the wax is liquid.

When to Stop Burning

Discontinue use when only a small amount of wax remains or when the flame is too close to the bottom of the cup or holder.

Do not continue burning if:

  • The cup or holder is cracked or damaged
  • The wick has shifted too close to the edge
  • The flame is producing excessive smoke
  • The candle is repeatedly self-extinguishing
  • The holder is overheating

Holder Safety

  • Use only holders designed for tealights or votives.
  • Do not use thin decorative glass unless it is rated for candle use.
  • Do not place hot holders directly on unprotected furniture.
  • Do not reuse cracked, chipped or weakened holders.
  • Allow holders to cool before washing or handling.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes that may crack glass or ceramic.

Burning Multiple Tealights or Votives

When burning several candles at once:

  • Use a separate approved holder for each candle.
  • Keep the flames and holders several inches apart.
  • Do not cluster candles where heat can build up.
  • Keep all candles within sight.
  • Confirm that the surface can safely support the combined heat.

Important Safety Reminders

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Keep away from flammable objects.
  • Burn only on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Do not move while burning or while wax is liquid.
  • Do not use water to extinguish.
  • Do not burn in a damaged holder.
  • Do not fall asleep while a candle is burning.
